Cornish charities showcased on tv by alumna
A new hour-long television programme showcasing some of the community work taking place in Cornwall is aired this weekend, co-presented by alumna Holly Harwood.
Holly, who graduated in History from the Penryn Campus in 2012, was chosen to present the programme after producers saw a show reel she had made on YouTube.
She and co-presenter Dan Norris were tasked with researching, filming and editing the episode for the Brilliant Britain series, which showcases charity and community work around the UK. Holly and Dan’s episode focussed on their home county of Cornwall.
The pair chose to profile two surf charities - The Wave Project, which provides surfing courses for young people, and Surf Action which is dedicated to supporting military veterans.
The programme also features the Cornwall Blind Association, which supports blind and partially sighted people across the county, the Sensory Trust, which makes places more accessible for all, regardless of age, disability and social circumstances, and Azook which provides Cornish resources for schools and an online Cornish archive.
Holly said: “I really enjoyed researching and presenting a programme based on the beautiful county I not only grew up in, but attended University. I made sure I included some history segments due to my passion for Cornish heritage, and am really looking forward to it being aired on television.”
Their episode of Brilliant Britain is scheduled to be shown on Community Channel this Sunday 8 December at 8pm (Sky 539/Freeview 87). It will be repeated for two weeks on Sunday evenings and Monday mornings at 7am.
