Alumnae build students' networking confidence

The event started with two of Exeter’s successful alumnae sharing their experiences of networking and providing top tips. This was followed by a session of speed networking where students were able to meet alumnae.

This was the first networking event for Law student Natalie Hackman. She described how helpful it was to see what other graduates have done with their degrees.

“This was the best Career Zone event I have attended in my 3 years at Exeter… I am a final year student and the thought of entering into the real world is quite daunting... It was reassuring to hear that most of the [alumnae] had no idea what they wanted to do on graduating … but have found success in their various career paths.”

Charlotte Harrison also found the event helpful. Charlotte is studying an MPhys Physics with Astrophysics.

“I didn't imagine having so much fun. I learned so much about networking and its value, something I did not see myself valuing previously,” she said.

“The Alumnae are an incredible group of women of all ages, and stages in their careers, and I feel very fortunate to have met them… I thought it was a fantastic event and will highly recommend any time spent with the Alumnae to all my coursemates.”

Sarah Bailey (One Planet MBA 2012), part of the Alumnae Group said;

“It was a pleasure to meet students during the networking event. Networking is such an important skill, and something which all students need to consider. Events like this are a great and gentle way to start practising, and begin to understand the value of making connections.

“Whatever your degree subject, or your intentions after graduation, the importance of building a network and learning how to approach new people and manage your contacts cannot be underestimated.”
