Roz hopes it will become the go-to resource for all natural scientists who want to stay up-to-date with the latest discoveries
Alumna's dream magazine becomes a reality
The first issue of Biosphere magazine, created by alumna Roz Evans (Conservation Biology and Ecology 2014), has now been released.
Biosphere was recently featured for its successful Kickstarter campaign. Now, around 500 subscribers have received their first copy of the magazine. Roz, who graduated from the Penryn Campus this year, is not only the founder but also the director and editor of the magazine. She says that she hopes it will become the “go-to resource for all natural scientists who want to stay up-to-date with the latest discoveries.”
The publication has already received endorsements from high-profile readers such as BirdLife International’s Communications Officer Martin Fowlie. Wildlife enthusiast and television presenter Steve Backshall (Hon DLitt Exeter) has also agreed to contribute to a future issue. Roz says that no one thing inspired her to create the magazine, though she credits her undergraduate experience as part of the inspiration. Her lecturers emphasised the importance of reading primary literature to stay knowledgeable about current research but she knew this would be difficult once she graduated.
Roz created her own solution, a magazine designed to bridge the gap between academic journals and popular magazines in a way that appealed to both sides of the fence.
Roz is now thinking forward, she hopes to create a mobile app that will enable subscribers to read the magazine digitally. She also looks forward to the day when Biosphere can fund grants promoting science outreach. In the meantime, the team is growing, with the most recent addition of alumnus Nik Hubbard.
