Alumnus helps with Headstart engineering week

40 budding engineers have spent four days with the College of Engineering, Maths and Physical Sciences undertaking activities in order to gain an insight into what undergraduate engineering entails.

The University has run the Headstart engineering residential programme for year 12 students for a number of years, in conjunction with the Engineering Development Trust.

Alumus Alex Crump (MEng. Civil Engineering 2013), a Chartered Civil Engineer working at Devon County Council, took part in the ‘Grapevine’ session, an opportunity for the students to hear from a panel of graduates who’ve taken the next steps in their careers, to get a sense of the possibilities which an engineering degree offers. Members of the panel told stories of their own journey from school to university and then on into employment and shared their inspiration together with lessons picked up along the way.

The session was extremely popular with lots of questions from the students all keen to pick the panel’s brains for tips. Feedback from previous programmes has shown that this session is among the most valuable to the students attending, who really appreciate the opportunity to hear from relatable role models.

If you are interested in supporting current or future students in similar activities we’d love to hear from you at alumni@exeter.ac.uk.
