Work Shadowing Scheme

New Work Shadowing Scheme Launched

This April saw the launch of the Work Shadowing Scheme, a programme which gives students the opportunity to shadow a professional for a day in their workplace. These opportunities provide a brilliant chance for students to see what it is like to work in a particular sector, job role or company, helping them with their career plan and development.

A student from this year’s scheme said “the scheme was wonderful for me. I really wanted work experience but was having no luck when I applied directly to organisations, so the fact that the University offered such a scheme allowed me to gain the experience I wanted. I was fortunate that my host took a proactive approach to the experience, scheduling a day's worth of activities for me.”

Alumni have been great supporters of the scheme, with many offering opportunities in their workplaces. Eloise Tong (Drama, 2012) gave two students the chance to shadow her for a day in April. She said of her experience; “Participating in the Work Shadowing Scheme this year has been a hugely rewarding experience and has cemented how it important it is for students to have access to these kinds of opportunities. The two students I was paired with learned a lot about the arts industry and the different career paths that are available to them. I would recommend other alumni and supporters of the University of Exeter volunteer their time to help better equip our graduates for their future careers.”

As well as being a great way for students to gain experience and knowledge about the career they are interested in, the scheme also offers the opportunity for hosts to share their knowledge and experience as well as meet Exeter students and find out about university life.

We are always looking for alumni who are able to help our students with their careers, through profiles, work shadowing, internship opportunities or talks. If you would be interested in getting involved please complete our online Volunteer Registration form, or email alumni@exeter.ac.uk to tell us how you would like to help.
