Developing business and management acumen

Some people avoid starting a degree because they don’t want to embark on full-time study, or are worried about the costs involved. An alternative route is a degree apprenticeship, which allows you to earn and have a full-time job while studying.

Degree apprenticeships are designed by universities and businesses and allow people to study flexibly while continuing with their career. They also allow companies to invest in staff and help equip them with the skills needed for the future.

The University of Exeter offers a selection of degree apprenticeships in subjects including Applied Business Management. This course is tailored to the needs of regional and national employers. Those on the course get a BSc from a world-class university, become a member of the CMI from the start of the course, and are awarded a Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership when they complete the programme.

As well as the course in applied business, from September 2018, the University of Exeter will also be offering Senior Leader Degree Apprenticeships, underpinned by the Exeter MBA. This is one of the first Level 7 (MBA level) courses offered by a Russell Group institution.

Degree Apprenticeships (and other apprenticeships) have been funded through the Apprenticeship Levy since April 2017. This means that all employers with a payroll bill of more than £3 million automatically pay the Apprenticeship Levy of 0.5 per cent to the Government. Employers with a pay bill of less than £3 million will not pay the Apprenticeship Levy but are still eligible for government funding of up to 90 per cent to access Higher Level and Degree Apprenticeships.

Courses are delivered using online technology as well as at the University of Exeter’s campuses, and around 20 per cent of the apprentice’s time will be given over to study, attending university for around ten days a year. The course does not require a weekly day release, allowing the student to meet their usual commitments at work and home. The modules led by the University of Exeter’s academics include topics such as managing people, finance and accounting and agile project management.
