Teaching excellence recognised in latest awards

Top academics at the University of Exeter have been recognised by students for their teaching excellence, at an annual awards ceremony.

The accolades were presented at the annual Students’ Guild and FXU Teaching Awards 2017. The Teaching Awards are student-led, meaning the students are responsible for nominating, shortlisting and choosing the winners of the Awards. . The prestigious event took place in the Great Hall on the Streatham Campus and was attended by students, staff and academics from across the University.

The title of ‘Best Lecturer’ went to Holly East from Geography. “I’m so thrilled. It means so much – especially because the nominations were put forward by the students themselves,” Holly said after the event.

“It is such a privilege to be able to contribute to the students’ academic and professional training.”

Winning the ‘Best Subject’ category at the Penryn Campus was Biosciences, whilst at Exeter that award went to Sport and Health Sciences.

“The Teaching Awards are very special for our staff and the wider University community because at the heart of these awards is the principle of being student-led,” said Professor Tim Quine, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) who also spoke at the event.

“The Awards are a clear symbol of the partnership that exists between our talented and engaged students who study collaboratively with our passionate educators whose subject-expertise is informed by their world-leading research and scholarly engagement with pedagogy. I would like to congratulate all of those who won awards and to everyone who was nominated, for their achievements.

“We would like to thank the FXU, Students’ Guild and all the students who took the time to nominate staff for these awards.”

The awards were introduced eight years ago to recognise the outstanding dedication and commitment of University staff. Their aim is to acknowledge staff who not only provide outstanding academic experience, but also support their students' wider development and learning.
