Camborne School of Mines Trust funds more than £200,000 of scholarships
The Camborne School of Mines Trust has generously bestowed more than £200,000 to support students embarking on the first steps towards forging a successful mining career.
The CSM Trust has given the significant sum towards scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate students at the world-famous mining school, based at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus in Cornwall.
The scholarships will be granted to students enrolled on Mining and Geology programmes, and will be awarded as cash bursaries throughout the first year.
The scholarships are part of a comprehensive initiative to encourage more people from all backgrounds into the field of mining engineering.
This initiative includes the ground-breaking Women in Mining Scholarship, for females enrolled on the MSc Mining Engineering course - the only one of its kind anywhere in the UK.
Professor Kip Jeffrey, Head of the Camborne School of Mines added: “We are extremely grateful for this generous donation from the CSM Trust, which provides magnificent support for everyone associated with the School, past, present and future.
“I am positive there will be a host of excellent candidates for the scholarships, and look forward to welcoming them to the Mining School in due course.”
Dr Tony Batchelor, from the CSM Trust said: "The Trust is delighted to be able to offer this support to encourage the next generation of mining experts. We hope it will provide some invaluable assistance to those embarking on a career in mining, and we wish the successful applicants all the very best of success for their studies and future careers."
The Camborne School of Mines has a 130-year heritage of delivering mining education, and has just been ranked 16th in world for Mining Engineering in the QS World Ranking.
The Camborne School of Mines Trust is the school’s governing body and includes alumni and representation from academic staff. The Trust has donated more than £2 million to the University of Exeter since 1993 in the form of grants for the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff, travel, field trips, prizes, seed corn funds and student association support.
