Exeter subjects amongst very best in The Complete University Guide
Both science and humanities subjects at the University of Exeter have been recognised as being amongst the very best nationally in the latest influential league table.
Thirty-six subjects are ranked in the top 20, with 26 in the top ten in the Complete University Guide 2019, released today.
Sports Sciences was ranked as the very best in the country, while Drama (2nd), Radiology (3rd), Sociology (4th), Theology (4th), History (5th) and Classics (5th) all secured places in the top 5.
The University also rose in the main rankings, up to 12th out of 131 eligible universities nationwide.
Professor Sir Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter said: “This latest ranking, particularly on a subject level, reinforces Exeter’s position as a rich and rewarding environment in which our students can flourish. It is a testament to the enthusiasm, dedication and hard-work displayed by everyone associated with the University.”
Nineteen subjects appear in the top 10 rankings this year, with Anthropology, Archaeology, English, Russian and Geology ranked 6th, Accounting and Finance, Engineering, Italian and General Engineering 7th, Middle Eastern and African Studies, Philosophy and Politics 8th, Business, Geography, Iberian, Art History and Psychology 9th and French and German ranked 10th.
The subjects ranked in the top 20 are Biological Sciences (14th), Economics (14th), Medicine (14th), Physics (16th), Law (19th) and Electrical Engineering (19th).
The Complete University Guide ranking is based on 10 measures: Student Satisfaction, Research Quality, Research Intensity, Entry Standards, Student: Staff Ratio; Spending on Academic Services; Spending on Student Facilities; Good Honours Degrees; Graduate Prospects and Completion.
Dr Bernard Kingston, Chairman of The Complete University Guide said: “We are pleased to be able to provide the first full ranking of all 131 eligible UK universities. Throughout, uppermost in our stance has been what’s best for university applicants and ultimately, for the universities themselves.
“The underlying data in our independent rankings are theirs and their appearance gives both the public at large and the universities an opportunity to compare and contrast in an open and flexible way.”
“They should not be used in isolation but alongside all the other advice and information in the Guide. Its tables are recognised for their stability and consistency, and this year once again demonstrates this.”
The latest ranking comes after the University of Exeter was ranked joint 7th in the THE Student Experience Survey in March, and 9th in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards announced earlier this month.
