Joint Centre of Excellence in Environmental Intelligence hosts inaugural event
The key challenges, priorities and solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues will be showcased at a special event this week.
The pioneering, Exeter-based, Joint Centre of Excellence in Environmental Intelligence (JCEEI) is hosting a high-profile online conference, on December 17-18th 2020.
The event will feature presentations from some of the world’s leading experts in the burgeoning field of Environmental Intelligence, including Sir Adrian Smith, Chief Executive of the Alan Turing Institute, and Met Office Chief Scientist Professor Stephen Belcher.
In addition to bringing together presentations from international leaders in the field, the conference will feature interactive sessions, including panel discussions, opportunities for Q&As and on-line poster sessions.
Professor Shaddick, who is also Chair in Data Science and Statistics at the University of Exeter, said: “With the unprecedented amount of environmental data that is now available, coupled with recent advances in computing and data science, we have an exceptional opportunity to transform our understanding of the complex interactions between the environment, climate, natural ecosystems, human social and economic systems.”
Environmental Intelligence is an exciting new field of research that sits at the interface of environmental and sustainability research, data science, artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
It will provide the information that is crucial to enhancing our resilience to environmental change and ensuring that our future interactions with the natural environment are sustainable.
“Environmental Intelligence will provide the meaningful insight required for informed decision-making, improved risk management, and the technological innovation that will lead us towards a sustainable interaction with the natural environment.
Research in the Joint Centre will focus on utilising the power of data to transform our understanding of a changing environment and find solutions to the challenges that this presents. Initial areas of research will include climate change, clean air, extreme weather events and environmental challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Joint Centre is exploring collaboration with The Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, to ensure this work benefits from access to the wealth of expertise within The Turing Institute and its partners and is based on the very latest developments in data science and artificial intelligence.
