Virtual event in Cornwall explores link between art and the natural world
The distinctive relationship between art and the natural world will be explored during a special virtual event in Cornwall, to be held later this month.
The University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) and the Eden Project have teamed up to co-host the special event, called Art, Ecology, Emergency: Sustaining Practice from Wednesday, June 17th.
The two-day event, which is free to take participate in, is open to members of the public, artists and budding ecologists alike.
The event will explore the intersections of artistic practice and ecology, bringing together artists, producers and academics to share their experiences and their research.
Each session is hosted by a leading expert, with several guest speakers also on hand to offer fascinating insights and fresh perspectives. The sessions begin and 11am and 7.30pm, and will last around 90 minutes.
Among the questions that will be raised are: How can contemporary art practice open up social, ecological and geological perspectives on landscape and place?; Can art play a role in helping us reflect on our individual relationships and responsibilities to nature?; and How can ecological expertise inform creative practice?.
Caitlin DeSilvey, Associate Director for the University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute and one of the hosts for the event said: "In these challenging times, there is a clear need for new perspectives and alliances that can help us understand our relationship to the natural world. We’re delighted to be able to come together with the Eden Project and Culture Declares Emergency to offer this one-off event exploring the intersections between artistic practice and ecological research."
The event will be hosted online by Culture Declares Emergency as part of 'The Offer'. It's free and open to all but places must be booked in advance. To book a space please visit http://bit.ly/ArtEcologySymposium
