Exeter consolidates position in influential global rankings
The University of Exeter has maintained its position amongst the leading universities both nationally and internationally, according to the latest influential global rankings.
Exeter is ranked 8th in the UK, 10th in Europe and 31st internationally in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2021, released today (Wednesday, June 2nd)
The University’s Life and Earth Sciences subjects have risen one place to secure a top 10 position, while All Sciences (31st) and Biomedical and Health Sciences (32nd) also appear in the top 50.
Social Sciences and Humanities was ranked 53rd, while Physical Sciences and Engineering was positioned 222nd. Maths and Computer Sciences saw the largest rise in the rankings, moving up 37 places to 233rd overall.
The rankings, which are based on Web of Science indexed publications from the period 2016-2019, provide a measurement of the scientific impact and performance of more than 1200 major universities worldwide and their involvement in scientific collaboration.
Positioning within the rankings is based on the number of citations quoted in highly respected and influential journals. Exeter’s rankings are based on the percentage of publications ranked in the top 10% most cited, indicating that the University’s high-quality research has been referenced by other academics in major journals.

“These rankings provide a distinct insight into how our world-leading research is recognised and referenced across the global academic community. It is also pleasing to see that our research into Life and Earth Sciences has secured a top 10 position.
"Our Green Futures Campaign pays testament to how the University is driving action on the environment and climate emergency in partnership with governments, businesses and communities, and this ranking highlights just how pivotal and established our research in this field has become.”
