For the new table, more than 1,800 universities across 96 countries and regions were ranked in five different fields: the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.

The results were determined by measuring the quantity, quality, influence and impact of research at each institution, as well as the extent of international collaboration and the number of staff recognised with awards.
