'The Painters of the City: Art in North Africa 1880-1920' exhibition on tour
'The Painters of the City: Art in North Africa 1880-1920', an exhibition originally staged at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies in Exeter, and curated by Professor William Gallois, recently transferred to the Instituto de Ciencios Sociais at the University of Lisbon.
Run alongside an international workshop on 'Imagined Pasts: Colonialism, Photography and Archives', the exhibition charts the incredible story of public art made by women in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco in the colonial era. It recreates life-sized versions of indigenous art forms in contemporary settings and will then transfer to Tunisia in May 2020 and then to Mexico in May 2020.
