Exeter scientist becomes ASAB president
A University of Exeter scientist has been chosen as president of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB).
Professor David Hosken, an evolutionary biologist and long-time ASAB member, will begin his term shortly and will join his first ASAB council meeting in December.
Founded in 1936, ASAB runs the journal Animal Behaviour, holds conferences, funds research, promotes the ethical treatment and conservation of animals, and encourages the teaching of animal behaviour in schools.
There are now about 1,000 members, many of whom work in universities, research institutes and schools.
"It is a great honour to selected as president of ASAB, especially knowing I follow some amazing past presidents," Professor Hosken said.
"The society undertakes outstanding work supporting, for example, public engagement in science, ECRs, conferences and research, and understanding behaviour has never felt as important as now.
"I really look forward to working with council over the next few years as there are some very big issues at play currently, and I hope ASAB can play its part in addressing them."
Professor Pat Monaghan, current ASAB president, said: "It is a great pleasure for me to be handing over to such an enthusiastic, appropriate and competent person.
"The society’s future will be in good hands."
