Opportunity strikes for graduates
Thirteen graduates from the Camborne School of Mines have been offered places on Barminco’s graduate scheme, based in Australia, starting in the New Year.
The Australian mining industry is experiencing a ‘mini boom’ as a result of commodity prices and increased exploration activity. Mining is an integral part of the solution to combat climate change through production of minerals to meet growing demand for clean energy technologies. Mining operations have continued to operate amid the coronavirus lockdown in Western Australia as mining workers are classified as essential.
University of Exeter’s Camborne School of Mines delivers a host of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in Mining Engineering, Geology, Surveying and Exploration. Graduates can expect to take jobs across the world in a variety of sector roles and these lucky ten passed a two stage application process to gain the offer of the role and visa for employment in Australia.
Barminco is part of the Perenti Group, Australia’s second largest integrated mining services provider, and a global leader in hard rock underground mining. The graduates will gain hands on experience in at least eight underground mining roles supported with structured training over a 2 ½ year program whilst also working towards qualifying for a First Class Mine Managers Certificate.
Kip Jeffrey (Head of School): “This is a prime example of where a career in mining or geology can take you and we are delighted to provide graduates of choice to industry. We wish all our graduates the very best of luck as they start their geoscience career.”
Jay Innes (Mining Graduate): “I found out about the mining course through my teacher. I was offered the role after Barminco attended the CSM career fair and held interviews on campus. Starting my career as a graduate mining engineer in Australia was the ultimate dream. I can’t wait to start the graduate programme which involves rotations across the underground operations and to gain the first class ticket is fantastic for my future career as a mine manager.
“I found myself on the mining engineering by chance but having completed it and been offered a graduate job straight after university I can’t have imagined doing any other degree. Starting my career as a graduate mining engineer in Australia is the culmination of three years of excellent preparation by the mining department at CSM. Barminco offer one of the most comprehensive graduate programmes in industry, involving rotations across operations and ultimately leading to a first class mine managers ticket which will open doors to many future career prospects across the globe.’
