CSM graduates join prestigious mining company
Graduates from the Camborne School of Mines will launch their fledgling careers with one of the world’s most successful and prestigious mining companies.
Fifteen students from the world-famous mining school, based at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall have successfully applied to join the Graduate Programme with the multinational commodity trading and mining company Glencore.
More than 60 recent graduates and last year students has applied for the coveted scheme, which offers mining engineering, geotechnical or geology roles. The successful applicants will be deployed to one of five sites in South America, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Professor Kip Jeffrey, Head of Camborne School of Mines said: “Mining engineers and geologists are in high demand worldwide and Camborne School of Mines has been helping satisfy this demand for more than a hundred years. It has a long-standing international reputation for providing graduates who not only know the theory but can put this into practice and start producing valuable work straight away.
“We greatly value our relationship with Glencore and are discussing ways in which we can strengthen that further in the future. We are also delighted that so many of our graduates have been able to secure positions on this prestigious scheme, and wish them luck in their future careers.”
Danny Callow, from Mopani and part of the selection panel said: “We value CSM mining and geology graduates above graduates from other institutions in that they have a balance of theory and practical skills by the time they graduate.
“Many have worked during their vacations in mining related roles. Most are prepared to move into hands-on roles and into challenging working environments without question. The history and legacy of CSM continues to turn out good quality graduates, which is why we typically recruit exclusively from here when filling geology and mining roles. “
Jack Connolly, one of the successful applicants added: “Having just completed my BEng Mining Engineering degree at Camborne School of Mines, I have been fortunate enough to have been offered a graduate mining engineer role with Glencore.
“The role is based in Central Africa and is based at a large copper/cobalt mine which has both underground and open pit operations. The role is based over two years where I will gain experience of the whole operation in all the different areas available to me.
“The course at CSM has prepared me by a great mix of both academic skills learnt in the classroom, and practical skills learned through summer placements and at CSM's own facilities. Right now my future is looking exciting and challenging, a career starting with a great education from a world class mining school, and a graduate program with one of the largest mining firms on the planet."
