Met Office Visit Day
Sixty Five Geography students from Streatham and Penryn campuses recently travelled to the Met Office headquarters in Exeter for an immersion day.
They were welcomed to the site with an introduction to the organisation and a welcome from the cross-government Head of Geography, David Wood, read by Sarah Johnson, the Met Office’s Head of Stakeholder Affairs.
Students were divided into small groups, and given the chance to hear from and network with a range of Met Office employees who had all studied a geography-related subject whilst at University. This allowed students to gain an insight into the career opportunities available to them, and appreciate the range of roles in a large organisation like the Met Office. Students were also given a tour of the site, taking in the library and Climate Change Research Centre which really brought to life the impact of their work across all aspects of the sector. One student said that ‘The tour was really interesting. It gave me a better understanding of how the Met Office works, and that it’s more than just a forecasting service’.
Work Placement Coordinator John Greaves, said ‘This real-world input from professionals was invaluable for students as they begin to make choices about their future.’ We would like to thank all the Met Office staff who played a part in making the student’s visit hugely informative and enjoyable.
