Axis of Protection Seminar Series in Geneva

The first seminar of the Axis of Protection Seminar Series of 2019/2020 took place at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland.

Bruno de Meyere (International Committee of the Red Cross) presented the key findings of the Commentaries to the Second Geneva Convention.

The talk went into detail on the specific features of the protection of victims of armed conflict at sea. It raised important questions about the relationship with other bodies of international law such as International Human Rights Law and International Refugee Law. The presentation was followed by a brief response from Dr Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne (University of Reading) and then an open question and answer session amongst the participants. The session was chaired and moderated by Emilie Max (Geneva Academy).

The 'Axis of Protection: Human Rights in International Law' seminar series, inaugurated in 2013, provides an opportunity for scholars to engage in discussion of contemporary and challenging issues concerning the protection of human rights in international law with emphasis on human rights law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, and international refugee law. The series is co-convened by Dr Ana Beduschi (Exeter), Dr Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne (Reading), Dr Annika Jones (Durham), Dr Kubo Mačák (Exeter), and Dr Reuven (Ruvi) Ziegler (Reading).
