Devon Chambers Semi-Finals

On Friday 13th February, the Mistresses of the Moot, Emily Au and Gemma Edey, hosted the semi-finals of the Devon Chambers Internal Moot Competition.

We were fortunate enough to be joined by Richard Snowden QC, from Erskine Chambers, one of Britain’s most eminent insolvency silks, and who was named by The Times as one of the 500 most influential people in the country this year.

Mr Snowden very kindly judged the semi-finals of the competition, which consisted of a Land Law co-ownership moot problem. He provided a gruelling challenge to the mooters’ submissions, leading to fantastic analyses of legal debates, and excellent demonstrations of skilful mooting and legal flair. Congratulations to all our semi-finalists for their performance: Charlie Beaty, Meghan Bryson, Casandra Chong, Annabel Goulding, Connor Jones, Charles Kwek, Lowri Patterson and Ellie Sharrock.

Mr Snowden then offered an insightful summary judgment and selected our finalists for the competition (Charlie Beaty, Meghan Bryson, Annabel Goulding and Lowri Patterson) who proceeded to compete in the Final at the UK Supreme Court on 2nd March.

Following the moot, Mr Snowden gave an open lecture on the modern value of advocacy, highlighting its nature as a personal skill that must be honed according to an individual’s qualities and characteristics. His lecture was infused with humorous tales of his career so far at the Bar, and served as encouragement that advocacy is a ubiquitous skill that anyone can master.

We are extremely grateful to Dr Kate Harrington, Dr Kubo Macak and Professor Anthony Musson for all their invaluable help and advice in arranging the event.
