On 8 July, Dr Joseph Lee, senior lecturer in law at Exeter, visited DG Justice of the European Commission in Brussels. A meeting was held to discuss corporate governance issues in the EU and Asia. Dr Lee provided a EU-Asian comparative perspective on transparency of share ownership, the functions and responsibilities of enforcement agencies, and shareholder value preference in takeovers. This comparative approach is important to uncover the legal, institutional and cultural particularities of various jurisdictions. The meeting was a useful instance of public engagement to explore matters critical to the Commission’s work and for a better understanding of how corporate governance issues are being negotiated at a transnational level where markets are increasingly interconnected through cross-border trade relations. Dr Lee also discussed areas for further research collaboration. He is currently following up on these initiatives.
