Dr Lee gives keynote speech at KPMG Conference

Dr Joseph Lee recently gave a keynote speech at the KPMG Company Secretary Conference at the National Taiwan University.

The Chairman of the Taiwan Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC), Dr Ming-Chung Tseng, opened the conference and introduced Taiwan’s Five Year Corporate Governance Plan.

Mr Michael Lin, President of the Taiwan Stock Exchange, discussed the role of the Exchange, as a service provider, in promoting corporate governance and using innovative methods to infuse governance culture into listed companies’ DNA. Dr Joseph Lee, Exeter University Law School, discussed how company secretaries, working collaboratively at the transnational level, can bring value to markets. Professor Pey Woan Lee, Singapore Management University, presented the regulatory model of company secretary and corporate governance in Singapore. Professor Xianchu Zhang, University of Hong Kong, discussed the continuity and changes of the role after 1997. Professor Ciyun Zu, Tsinghua University of China, gave a detailed insight into the differences between company secretary at the board level and at the company level.Professor Wang-ruu Tseng, National Taiwan University, provided a comparative overview and discussed how such common law invention fits into a civil law system.

Mr Winston Wu, Chairman of KPMG Taiwan, commented that this conference would increase clients’ understanding of the importance of corporate governance and what added value company secretaries can foster. More than 300 clients attended the conference.
