Our new Law and Business Students, September 2019
Exeter Law School in Cornwall officially opens
On Friday 20th September 2019 we officially launched our Exeter Law School in Cornwall (Skol an Lagha Karesk). The event was attended by our first cohort of students as well as staff, local solicitors, barristers and members of the Cornwall Law Society.
Kicking off the proceedings was Professor David Hosken, the new Pro-Vice Chancellor for Cornwall. David gave a brief introduction to the event and congratulated the students on their previous excellent academic attainment, which enabled them to attend the University of Exeter and take a place on the exciting new law and business programme. This rousing welcome was followed by Fred Howell, the President of the Cornwall Law Society, who discussed how it is never too late to pursue a change in career. Fred shared with the audience that he had only qualified as a solicitor at the tender age of 45, highlighting how there isn’t an expiry date on becoming a solicitor! Finally, Professor Richard Moorhead, the new Head of the Exeter Law School, finished the proceedings by giving his congratulations to the students. He praised the undergraduates for being the first cohort of a truly revolutionary approach to Law. We were then treated to some incredibly tasty canapés by Avo Catering, a local sustainable catering company.
The evening was a roaring success and kick starts what will be a fantastic year ahead and bright future for the Law School in Cornwall.
Professor Richard Moorhead, Head of the Exeter Law School said of the new Law and Business programmes “the thing that really excites me about these programmes is that they blend together law and business in ways which encourage students to learn how law influences business and business influences law. These students will be better equipped to understand how law and business work, but also how business and law can work together better. The emphasis on content, skills, and collaboration that runs through the course is potentially powerful and transformative. And it has attracted an exceptionally diverse and talented cohort of students, well beyond our expectations for Year 1.”
Dr Caroline Keenan, Director of Law and Business said"it’s been wonderful to collaborate so closely with our colleagues in the Business School to build this programme which brings together the best of both our worlds. We’re now looking forward to delivering a qualifying law and business programme, which nurtures and develops the abilities of each of our students, both as an individual and as part of a cohort with unique skills, throughout their time with us."
