Professor Schmitt recipient of multiple appointments

Professor Michael Schmitt has recently been appointed to multiple boards in the field of international law.

The International Society for Military Law and the Law of War has appointed him to its Advisory Board. A grouping of 25 national groups, as well as independent members, the Society is dedicated to the study and advancement of military law and international humanitarian law.  It is presently organising a major conference to be held at the University of Exeter that will be directed by the Law School’s Dr. Aurel Sari.

His second appointment is to the Advisory Board for the newly established Institute of Peace and Security.  Based at Cologne University in Germany, the Institute is dedicated to interdisciplinary study of such issues as the use of force in international relations, humanitarian law, international criminal law, and reestablishing stability in the aftermath of armed conflict.

Finally, Schmitt has been reappointed as a Senior Fellow at the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Center of Excellence. Among his activities there is serving as Director of the Tallinn 2.0 project, which is examining the international law governing hostile cyber activities by and against States during peacetime.  The topics of the study range from human rights to space law. Governments are exceptionally interested in the project. In April, legal advisers from 35 countries met at the invitation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss its interim findings.  Two more such meeting will be held in 2015. The project will conclude with publication of its results in 2016 by Cambridge University Press.
