Success for SSIS students at Students’ Guild Awards
Students from the College of Social Sciences and International Studies (SSIS) scooped three prestigious awards and many more were nominated at the Students’ Guild Awards this June.
On June 4th, students and staff from across the University and Students’ Guild gathered to reward and celebrate a wide variety of student achievements this year. SSIS was well-represented, with individual students and student groups from the College nominated in all but one award category.
Amongst those who were nominated from the College are:
- Politics Society’s General Election 2015 campaign for ‘Campaign of the Year’;
- Ryan Hopkins from Politics for ‘Student Leader of the Year’;
- Georgina Lewis from Sociology for ‘Outstanding Commitment to Student Welfare and Support’;
- Global Exe for ‘Student-Led Project of the Year’;
- Pavel Kondov (Politics) and Emma Finlinson (Anthropology) for ‘Outstanding Individual Contribution’;
- Richard Griffiths (Law) and Sam Woolven (Politics) for ‘Outstanding Student Staff Member’;
- Exeter MP Candidate Question Time for ‘Event of the Year’
- Bracton Law Society for ‘Student Group of the Year’ and their End of Year Gala for ‘Event of the Year.’
There were three winners from the College - Nick Lawley (Politics) for the ‘People’s Choice’ award, Bracton Law Society Committee for ‘Student Leader of the Year’ and Bulgarian Elections, led by Pavel Kondov (Politics), for the ‘Community Impact’ award. Richard Griffiths (Law) was highly commended for ‘Outstanding Student Staff Member’ and congratulations go to all nominees and winners!
Nick Lawley, winner of the ‘People’s Choice’ award, commented "I was both honoured and surprised to have won. I have loved my time at Exeter and the Guild has been an enormous part of that -whether helping to run a SABB campaign, being involved in the University's radio station or starting the first University Game of Thrones Society in the world.” Pavel Kondov, who led the Bulgarian Elections project which set up a polling station enabling students and local citizens to vote, said, “My team and I are incredibly honoured to have won this award and are grateful for all the support we have received from staff and fellow students. It is fantastically encouraging to see such a positive response to what we did, and it strengthens our belief that with enough motivation and effort we can really bring about change.”
The Guild Awards take place annually and are designed to recognise and reward outstanding work and effort from individuals and student groups. President of the Students’ Guild, Rachael Gillies, commented that, “This year’s Guild Awards winners and nominees demonstrated the staggering strength and variety of student engagement and activity, both on campus and in our community. I could not be more proud to have worked alongside such dedicated students this year.”
Associate Dean for Education in SSIS, Professor Wendy Robinson, commented that, “This has been a standout year for the College in the Guild Awards and in the representation of our students in a range of activities that are designed to help us make a difference to the quality of the student learning experience. Thank you to all those who took part and I look forward to us all continuing to work together in future years.”
