PhD publication prize winners

Our PhD students are vital participants in the research culture of the Department and their publications (whether during or after PhD) raise the international profile of the department, as well as contributing to scientific knowledge, to their own thesis and future careers.

We had some excellent submissions for the first departmental PhD publication prize, to the extent that we decided to award two prizes this year, for papers by Rosie Eade and Harry Mutton. The papers are:

Eade, R., Stephenson, D.B., Scaife, A.A. and Smith, D.M., Quantifying the rarity of extreme multi-decadal trends: how unusual was the late twentieth century trend in the North Atlantic Oscillation? Clim Dyn 58, 1555–1568 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1007/s00382-021-05978-4

Mutton, H., Chadwick, R., Collins, M., Lambert, F., Geen, R., Todd, A. and Taylor, C., 2022. The Impact of the Direct Radiative Effect of Increased CO2 on the West African Monsoon. Journal of Climate, 35(8): 2441-2458. https://doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D-21-0340.1

I would like to heartily congratulate Rosie and Harry for this achievement.

Professor Peter Ashwin
