University of Exeter cements successful partnership with Exeter Mathematics School and Exeter College
The University of Exeter, Exeter Mathematics School and Exeter College recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding and joined together to continue their support for pupils from across the South West to secure places at the very best universities in the country.
The state-funded Exeter Mathematics School, was launched in 2014 and is jointly sponsored by the University of Exeter and Exeter College. The school was one of the first two specialist University Mathematics Schools for enthusiastic young mathematicians and scientists in England and there are now 10 schools either open, or in pre-opening.
The sixth form offers the best young mathematicians in the South West the chance to study in an exciting and challenging environment. Exeter Mathematics School takes pride in being part of a vibrant educational ecosystem in Exeter, learning from and promoting best in widening access to maths. As with other specialist maths schools, it focusses on a wholistic, rounded curriculum, working in partnership with Exeter College to offer an expanded curriculum.
The school welcomes 120 students each year and has a fantastic track record of students achieving outstanding A-Level success. It is regularly ranked as one of the highest achieving Sixth Forms in the UK, and was named as The Sunday Times Sixth Form College of the Year in 2018.
The University of Exeter, Exeter College and Exeter Maths School are also founding members of the Exeter Education Alliance that launched last year. The alliance aims to use its dynamic partnership as a “living laboratory” to deliver innovative education and training to improve educational success and ambition for young people and adults.
Professor Lisa Roberts, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter said: “We are extremely proud to be a co-founder and partner of Exeter Mathematics School alongside Exeter College. This memorandum of understanding strengthens our commitment to working together in the future and supporting talented maths enthusiasts across the South West.”
Head Teacher, Exeter Mathematics School, Kerry Burnham said: “We are delighted to celebrate the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding and further cement our relationship with the University of Exeter and Exeter College. We have worked together to establish an environment that nurtures tomorrow’s mathematicians, scientists and engineers with a truly innovative curriculum.”
John Laramy, Principal and CEO of Exeter College said: “We are delighted to celebrate the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding. Our successful partnership helped to create one of the first Mathematics Schools in the Country, as a pioneer, which helped to set the standard for Maths Schools Nationally”.
The activities undertaken by the Exeter Education Alliance will benefit and contribute to the growth of the City of Exeter and the South West region.
