Medicine reached 5th in the Guardian University Guide 2018

Guardian top ten for two Medical School programmes

The University of Exeter Medical School’s Medicine programme has moved up to 5th place in the Guardian University Guide 2018, while Medical Imaging has moved up to 6th.

Both are significant gains on last year, where Medicine was ranked 10th, and Medical Imaging, which is listed under the category of Health Professions, was 15th.

It comes after Medicine moved up from 17th to 8th and Medical Imaging moved from 5th to 2nd (under the Medical Technology category) in the Complete University Guide 2018 last month.

The Guardian metrics take into account measures including student satisfaction levels with teaching, the course and feedback, staff-student ratio and tariff. It includes a “value added” score, which compares degree results with entry qualifications.

Professor Clive Ballard, Executive Dean and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter Medical School, said: “I’m delighted with these results, which are a credit to the dedication and talent of a wide range of our staff who put students at the centre of everything they do. The University of Exeter Medical School is only five years old and our trajectory has been phenomenal. I’d like to extent a huge thanks to everyone involved.”

The Guardian league table also ranks Exeter 13th out of 121 UK Higher Education institutions, and 7th in the Russell Group of leading research intensive universities. Four more subjects join Medicine in the top five this year. They are: Religious Studies and Theology, Sports Science, and Materials and Mineral Engineering.
