Medical School launches Exeter Expert Series in Genomics
The University of Exeter Medical School will launch the first course in its Expert Series in Genomics this Autumn 2017.
Demonstrating the way genomic technology will revolutionise the healthcare sector, the series is designed to encourage health professionals to embrace cutting-edge genomic developments in everyday practice.
In the past decade, genomic technology has both advanced diagnosis and become far more accessible to clinicians. These developments have created the potential to learn far more about the genetic causes of disease and to provide personalised treatment plans that are tailor-made to the individual.
The new Continued Professional Development series begins with Respiratory, Cardiology and Gastroenterology specialisms and provides an in-depth overview of genomic medicine, data technology and inheritance patterns.
Jean McEwan, Vice-Dean of Education at the University of Exeter Medical School, said: “Genomic technologies are impacting the health sector on a global scale. By facilitating the delivery of personalised medicine, these technologies will mean significant improvements in patient care. Our Exeter Expert Series will deliver tailored and insightful conferences, which will cover the specialisms of Respiratory, Cardiology and Gastroenterology and address the impact of genomic developments on each field to equip delegates with the necessary knowledge to capitalise on this technology and the opportunities it presents.”
Attracting participants from across the healthcare sector including doctors, consultants, nurses and allied health professionals, the new Expert Series will provide a clinical and practical perspective on genomics, incorporating everything from data, terminology and a clear family history to molecular autopsy, genetic referrals and genome and exome sequencing.
Attending as a key Guest Speaker, Dr Elijah Behr, President of the Association for Inherited Cardiac Conditions, said: “I’m delighted that the University of Exeter Medical School is addressing the key issue of Genomics and that I’ve been invited to speak at the Exeter Expert Series focusing on Cardiology. The impact of genomics across the healthcare sector is immense, and by holding an Expert Series, the University is highlighting its huge significance for patient care and our understanding of disease processes.”
Supported by Health Education England, the Exeter Expert Series will take place over three dates: Respiratory 12-13 October 2017, Cardiology 2-3 November 2017 and Gastroenterology 23-24 November 2017.
