Students award for Medical Sciences research community

The Medical School’s Medical Sciences programme has been voted Subject with the ‘Best Research Community’ at the University of Exeter Students Guild Teaching Awards.

The accolade, which is based on student nominations, was awarded at a ceremony on Tuesday evening.

Dr Reza Zamani, Director of the Medical Sciences programme, said: “It gives me real pleasure to accept this award on behalf of all our staff, and I would like to thank all students who nominated our programme. The credit, of course, goes to all education and research active scientists across the Medical School. Our students get exposure to their cutting-edge and wide-ranging research from Year 1, and particularly during the Professional Training Year placements and their Final Year projects. This contact and exposure really develops their skills and perspectives and exposes them to a host of potential career opportunities within the arena of science and technology.

“The research enquiry process undertaken in our group learning sessions prepares them for a life-long evidence-based learning and the utilisation of appropriate problem solving tools to approach medical and health issues.”

Professor Jean McEwan, Vice Dean (Education) at the Medical School, said: “Sincere thanks and congratulations to all of the Medical School’s scientist-educators who so ably support the learning of our Medical Science students. This student nomination is testament to their appreciation of the inspiring teaching that you deliver. I’d like to extend a personal thanks to these staff for their contributions to our excellent student experience.”

Dr Sarah Dean, Associate Professor of Psychology Applied to Rehabilitation and Health, was also nominated in the ‘Best Undergraduate Supervisor’ category. Her nomination stated that "she is a fantastic role model for young female scientists".
