The report discusses how to involve the environment and human health in policy making

Academics launch report for Rockefeller Foundation

Experts at the University of Exeter have contributed to an international report on how to bring health and the environment into global policy-making.

Professor Ian Bateman, from the Land, Environment, Economics & Policy Institute (LEEP) at the University of Exeter Business School, and Dr Benedict Wheeler, a Senior Research Fellow at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH), at the University of Exeter Medical School, were commissioned to write a report by the Rockefeller Foundation Economic Council on Planetary Health.

The council aims to make recommendations for policy on economic development and ecosystem protection, whilst promoting human health and wellbeing.

Professor Bateman presented the report, ‘Bringing health and the environment into decision making: the Natural Capital Approach’ to the council this month.

Professor Bateman said: “The University of Exeter are world leaders in health and environmental research. We’re delighted to be bringing the most up-to-date evidence to this forum which will influence policy worldwide.”

The report employs the Natural Capital Approach to review measures of human and environmental health, and discusses consequences of decisions. It aims to provide a framework for including and translating these measures for consideration in policy-making.

The Natural Capital Approach is the method of understanding decisions from both a business and a wider social wellbeing perspective.
