Exeter Medicine student wins Student Leader of the Year Award
A Medicine student from the University of Exeter Medical School has been named Student Leader of the Year at the Exeter Students’ Guild Awards.
The award recognises an individual who has effectively coordinated and led their society to achieve its aims and gain wide recognition for the work they do. Their superb organisation skills, team work and clear objectives have been a key factor in the success of the group they have led.
Waheed-Ul-Rahman Ahmed, a third-year Medicine student, was awarded the distinguished title in recognition of his outstanding leadership as Exeter Surgical Society’s President. Under his leadership, the society successfully secured over £3,000 in funding to host the South West’s first ever student-led Plastic Surgery Conference, and won the Association of Surgeons in Training’s ‘Battle of the Student Surgical Societies’.
On receiving the award, Waheed said: “I am truly humbled to have received one of the highest honours awarded by the Exeter Students’ Guild, and grateful to have my contributions to the Exeter Surgical Society recognised. Great leadership is not about wielding authority – it is about empowering those around you. I am looking forward to continuing to inspire more students and creating a network of young leaders that will contribute to putting Exeter’s Medical School on the map.”
The Students’ Guild Awards were introduced in 2013 to recognise and reward the exceptional achievements of Exeter’s student groups and individuals. The categories for this year’s awards aim to highlight the enthusiasm and commitment that can be seen across the Students’ Guild, from volunteering and representation, to welfare and the local community.
