Students will hold their inaugural women's health conference in March

Exeter students launch national women’s health conference

Medicine students from the University of Exeter Medical School have organised a national medical conference on women’s health.

Passionate students from Exeter Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society (EOGS) will hold their inaugural conference on Saturday 3rd March.

The society supports students in learning for the Medicine programme, as well as discovering more about prospective careers in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Rebecca Lissmann, who is President of EOGS, said: “I spent last year studying Medical Ethics and Women's Health rights and I am an aspiring obstetrician and gynaecologist - women's health is a passion of mine. When I was first exploring career possibilities, I wanted to attend a conference to learn more about women's health, but found that there few-to-none in the South West. The hard work of our committee has changed this. Having a medical conference on our doorstep should significantly improve accessibility for students in the area.

“This conference truly reflects all that women's health has to offer, with key companion themes including global health and leadership in medicine, delivered by a diverse range of expert speakers. I hope that our inaugural national conference will become an annual event and continue to grow year on year, providing recognition for the great work happening here in the South West.”

The day will include lectures, a panel discussion and workshops on topics such as labour and delivery, medical ethics, and identifying and caring for trafficked people. Johann Malawana, former Chair of the Junior Doctors Committee of the British Medical Association, will give a keynote speech. Other speakers include students, healthcare professionals and academics, including junior doctors, a midwife, and specialists in psychosexual medicine and genitourinary (GUM) medicine.
