Rupert Maclaren is now Student Observer as part of the Society of Radiographers UK Council

First ever University of Exeter Student accepted into Society Council

Medical Imaging student Rupert Maclaren is the first ever University of Exeter student elected onto the Society of Radiographers UK Council as Student Observer.

The council are elected members of the profession who govern the society ensuring that the views and concerns of radiographers are heard and addressed by the professional body. At the Annual Delegate’s Conference 2019, Rupert was elected as a member of the council. For the next year, Rupert will be representing student radiographers and will be working alongside Jodie Sexton, a therapeutic radiography student from the University of Portsmouth.

Rupert said: “I am incredibly proud to have been elected Student Observer to the UK Council of the Society of Radiographers by the delegates and future colleagues, at the Annual Delegates Conference 2019. To represent the interests of all UK radiography students at Council and as a member of the UK Student Representative Forum is a massive honour. This gives us a unique opportunity to work towards delivering the motions passed, whilst making sure that UK Council focus and remember the challenges that students face at university and on placement.”

Medical Imaging lecturer, Liliana Rodrigues said: “The council is prestigious and a powerful body for and driving change in the radiographer profession. To have been elected for the student representative role is an amazing achievement and as Rupert’s academic personal tutor I am incredibly proud. Seeing the drive and determination he has shown to be elected, I am sure he is going to do a great job.”

Rupert, along with another Medical Imaging Student, Eleri Davies, has also successfully secured himself a place on the Council of Dean’s leadership programme.

The competitive programme selects 50 students per year. These students come from across the UK on nursing, midwifery and allied health professional courses. The student leadership programme aims to promote and develop leadership skills among future nursing, midwifery and allied health professions workers.

As part of the programme students must, either individually or in a group, design or implement a project. Rupert teamed up with a radiotherapy student from Ulster University to design and implement a programme of recruitment for a national network of undergraduate and newly qualified radiographers. This programme aimed to deliver awareness sessions in primary and secondary schools promoting the radiograper profession.
