Student Employee of the Year award for Medical Sciences student

A Medical Sciences student at the University of Exeter Medical School has won a prestigious award at the annual Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) awards.

More than 150 students across the University were shortlisted for the leadership prize in the SEOTY awards 2019. Ferdinand Boucher, who studies Medical Sciences, was announced the winner of the leadership prize. He managed a website, proposed guest speakers to run bespoke workshops & gives quality feedback about the Student Peer Programme – designed for more experienced students to help first and second year students adjust to university study and life.

The annual SEOTY competition recognises student employees who combine study with part-time or temporary work. This is opposed to those who take part in internships, placements or act as volunteers.

Final year BSc Medical Sciences student, Ferdinand said: “It’s fantastic to have received this award that recognises all of us as students and part-time workers. To have been shortlisted was a real honour but to have won the award is incredibly humbling and I thank the judges who have voted for me.”

This award has come just a few weeks after Ferdinand was shortlisted for ‘Student Programme Organiser of the Year’ at the Exeter Student Engagement Recognition Awards.

Senior lecturer and founder of the Peer Assisted Learning Programme for Medical Sciences at University of Exeter Medical School, Dr David MacDonald said: "A massive congratulations to Ferdinand who has worked hard on both his course and also his part time work. He has had responsibility for management of the new Y3 programme which comes with a lot of work.  This is whilst he’s working towards his Medical Sciences degree, which is testament to his dedication. His leadership skills have allowed me to use my time more effectively in running the existing Y2 programme whilst knowing the Y3 programme is in safe hands under his stewardship.”

Ferdinand is now going to be presenting his work in the Peer Support Programme at two international conferences, in Exeter and Brighton.

The awards ceremony was sponsored by MG Vintage and Exeter Phoenix and hosted by the careers team in the career zone at Streatham Campus.
