The Exeter MSC Summer School is one of five schools across England
The University of Exeter to host summer medical school
The University of Exeter will welcome young people from underrepresented backgrounds wishing to pursue a career as a doctor to the second MSC Summer School, funded by Health Education England.
Students will learn about what it takes to work as a doctor, from clinical and communication skills to the values that underpin the profession. The aim is to provide access to the field for students who come from low-intake backgrounds, in line with the University of Exeter commitment to promoting education for all.
Professor Ian Fussell, Associate Dean of Education at the University of Exeter, said: “We’re absolutely committed to providing the best possible opportunities to students from underrepresented communities. We know they have the potential to be fantastic doctors, so we work with them whilst they are still at school, and support them when they join us.”
Dr Paul Garrud, Chair of the MSC Selection Alliance, said: “Congratulations to the medical schools who will be hosting events next year. It shows how keen the section is to pull together when it comes to widening access to the medical profession.”
This programme offers valuable experience for underrepresented students wishing to make the first steps in becoming a doctor. By supporting underrepresented students, the summer school will promote diversity and inclusivity in the medical field.
Katie Adams, National Senior Programme Manager – Widening Participation at Health Education England, said: “Health Education England’s widening participation programme has championed a range of programmes including supporting students from under represented backgrounds into medicine with the aim to encourage social mobility and ensure our NHS is more representative of the diverse communities it serves.”
