Undergraduate Conference wins Event of the Year award

The Undergraduate Student Conference has won the Event of the Year award, during the University of Exeter Students’ Guild Awards 2019.

The conference was organised by undergraduate students in collaboration with academic staff. The event gives a platform for students to showcase their academic achievements and their research projects through a series of posters and debates. More than 200 students attended the most recent event, in February.

The annual conference is designed to encourage collaboration and professional networking amongst the undergraduates from the various programmes offered at the University of Exeter Medical School. The organisers also worked with societies from across the University to contribute on workshops, and invited sixth form students from local schools to take part.

The award was given based on how actively it involved a diverse range of students, and great practice in publicity, financing and execution.

Ferdinand Boucher, a third-year Medical Sciences student and Lead Registration Supervisor, said: "It was a great honour to work on organising the Undergraduate Medical School Conference, which took place in February 2019. I would encourage everyone to get involved in this event in future years, as it's a great opportunity for all to get to know the current research that is being carried out by students at the Medical School."

Dr Vrinda Nayak, who organised the event, said: “This is a unique opportunity provided to all undergraduate students at the Medical School to organise and to participate in a conference. Not many students get an opportunity to attend a research conference in their undergraduate years.

“Providing this opportunity encourages students to learn beyond their curriculum but also to take pride in achievements of the Medical School, adding to adds to students’ learning experience and supporting research-inspired, inquiry-led learning.”

The conference is supported by funds received from the college and Annual Fund.
