James Garwood is an Anaesthetist and Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) Physician

Clinical Education student published in medical journal

A Clinical Education master’s student has had work published in an online medical journal.

Whilst studying at the University of Exeter, James Garwood wrote the assignment as part of his master’s course, looking at the barriers to undertaking technical skills. He successfully submitted it to ‘The Clinical Teacher’, a journal for clinicians who teach and people who are involved in education in a health care setting.

Anaesthetist and Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) Physician, James said: “I was really proud to get my work published. The skills I learned and developed during my MSc really helped me to critically analyse evidence, and be able to communicate my opinions effectively. The course really gave me insight into how to successfully engage with the academic community, and best techniques to get my work published.”

Karen Mattick, Professor of Medical Education, said: “The journal publication process is a tough and scrupulous challenge, however James has successfully navigated the rigours of journal submission. His assignment explores the barriers that face both trainers and teachers of technical clinical skills and the best ways to reduce these.”

The Clinical Education master’s programme, now completed by James, looks at clinical education from a practical standpoint, based on the reality of delivering clinical education in modern healthcare environments.
