College of Medicine and Health Awards Celebrate Student Success

Some of the University of Exeter’s brightest stars from across the Medicine, Medical Science and Medical Imaging programmes have been awarded for their academic and extracurricular achievements in 2020 across a range of categories in BMBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), Medical Imaging and Medical Sciences, at the 6th Annual End of year awards.

This year the awards were held via a digital ceremony on Feb 25th where recorded messages of congratulations and thanks were posted by lecturers and the senior team from across the University to recognise the winners accomplishments. The messages can be viewed here.

Professor Clive Ballard, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the University of Exeter Medical School, said “Our students have achieved so much under such difficult circumstances over the last 12 months, but the drive and passion they have has shone through at all times. While we can’t celebrate these achievements together as we usually would, we can still show the world what our students have been able to achieve in 2020 and recognise their achievements.

Congratulations to all of the winners as they make their first steps into medicine at a time when medical science has never been more important. With our students leading the way, our future is in safe hands”.

Nicki Saulsbury, Chair of the Prizes and Awards Committee added “As the Chair of the Prizes and Awards Committee I would like to add my congratulations to all the students and staff prize winners, but also my thanks to our prize sponsors for their ongoing support of the College and for giving our students the opportunity to apply for their awards. Huge thanks too, to the fantastic team behind the setting up of the online event.”

The awards included special commendations for Scientific Research and Communication, and Reflective Practice and Professionalism, and awards for Outstanding Patient Care.

The Citizenship Award winners were particularly special as the individuals showed valuable engagement with their local communities. Here’s what some of the winners had to say-

Gee Roberts (BMBS Extra Curricular- Joint Winner)

“I am delighted to have received this award for my contributions to the college. I really enjoy making a difference to student experience for current and future students and it is wonderful that this has been recognised in this award. I have also worked with many wonderful people along the way who have made all the projects which I have been involved in be the best that they can and be fun to be part of, thank you to each and every one of you!”

William Riley (BMBS Community- Joint Winner)

“The Citizenship Award made me proud of the voluntary work I do in a way that has built my confidence to do more, and inspires me to enable others to seek and seize similar opportunities. As described in the commendation, I spent much of the first Lockdown working in paid and unpaid voluntary roles for South Western Ambulance Service, applying the medical skills I have learned at the time and place they were most needed. In several cases, I may have been the first outsider, particularly representative of the NHS, that vulnerable patients had seen in person for weeks, if not months.”

Hunna Isan (BSc Medical Science Charity) -

“It is a great honour to receive the CMH Citizenship Award in the charity category. On behalf of our charitable organisation Dockland's Victim's Association (DVA), we are grateful for receiving this award in which the money donated will be implemented on a self-led project within our educational sector that provides support to the Thai Children's Trust that help vulnerable and disadvantaged children."
