New cohort of Exeter academics secure prestigious Alan Turing Institute Fellowships
The next generation of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) experts from the University of Exeter have secured prestigious fellowships from The Alan Turing Institute, it has been announced.
Thirty-five researchers, spanning many disciplines and all six Colleges at Exeter, have received the Turing Fellowships, which begin on October 1st 2021.
A further five academics have retained their Fellowships through existing roles and projects with The Alan Turing Institute.
The 12-month Fellowships not only allow the academics to enhance their careers, but also help pioneer world-leading research in the field of data science. They support the researchers to spend a proportion of their time at The Alan Turing Institute headquarters in London where they will join a hub of world-leading data science and AI expertise drawn from across the Turing’s network of partners .
Professor Richard Everson, Exeter’s Turing University Lead said: “It’s fantastic to see the breadth of disciplines represented by Exeter’s Turing Fellows, underlining both the use of data science and AI in the sciences and humanities, and the contributions of these disciplines to data science itself.”
The Turing Fellowships are bestowed on academics with proven research excellence in data science, artificial intelligence, or a related field. The newly appointed Fellows will contribute to The Alan Turing Institute's expanding interdisciplinary research programmes, as well as bring new ideas and proposals for collaborative projects with the potential for new research projects.
Institute Director and Chief Executive Adrian Smith said, “It gives me great pleasure to welcome this new group of Fellows. This cohort is incredibly multidisciplinary and diverse. They will bring a rich range of expertise and ensure we continue to do world-leading, impactful research.”
Exeter joined the prestigious The Alan Turing Institute in 2018, having been selected due to its research excellence and ability to bring new expertise and opportunities to enhance the core strengths of the Institute.
Data Science at Exeter is led by world-leading experts from the University’s Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI), which develops innovative approaches to the use of data and artificial intelligence in modern society, considering social implications as well as technical aspects.
The IDSAI holds research collaborations and strategic partnerships with industry across the globe, influences government policy in data science and AI and guide public dialogue around social and ethical issues arising from technological developments.
