Humanities students selected for prestigious German Summer School Scholarships
Second year students Oliver Brown, Katherine Costello, Florence Riley and Charlotte Rowley will be spending three to four weeks at Summer Schools across Germany, developing their language skills as well as their understanding of contemporary German culture, economics, literature and politics.
The DAAD Summer School scheme awards 850 Euros to the chosen students, which brings together undergraduates studying German from all over the world. During their stay, the recipients of the scholarship will also have the opportunity to visit places of interest in the local area.
The application process involved second year students studying German submitting a short application to the Modern Languages Department explaining why they wanted to apply to the scheme and what they would gain from the opportunity. Shortlisted candidates then submitted a German CV, application and accompanying supporting statement for the Scholarship. Christian Mossmann, Professor Ulrike Zitzlsperger and Professor Gert Vonhoff kindly offered their support to the shortlisted candidates with their CVs and supporting letters.
Christian, formally affiliated with the DAAD’s Ortslektoren network and the College’s linked representative said:
“It is fantastic that as many as four Modern Languages students were awarded one of the competitive DAAD Summer School Grants. This is a great achievement of our students and testament to their hard work and strong academic profile.”
He added: “We know from previous scholarship-holders how much students have enjoyed and benefitted from this experience and this year’s students have chosen really interesting courses which will lead them to prestigious universities across Germany. This will be a great start to their year abroad and a truly international experience during which they have the chance to study German language in-depth as well as a wealth of other contemporary cultural topics together with a group of students from all around the world.”
