Professor Adam Watt with students at Denstone College
Professor Adam Watt, Head of Modern Languages & Cultures, visits Denstone College
On Friday 14th February, Professor Adam Watt, Head of Modern Languages & Cultures, visited Denstone College in Staffordshire.
He gave a seminar to over twenty pupils (from fourth to sixth form) about our degree programmes in Modern Languages & Cultures, the skills our undergraduates develop and the opportunities that are available to them in the course of their degree. In the afternoon he gave a class to a lower-sixth A-level French group, sampling material from his second-year module ‘Paris je t’aime: Writing the City’, which was followed by a lively Q&A.
This visit was part of the department’s wider drive to engage with schools across the country, seeking to encourage the next generation of languages students. Later this term the department’s Director of Education, Professor Fiona Cox, will attend the ‘Careers Expo’ hosted by Worcester Royal Grammar School: an event for schools in the Worcester area; and in the Summer term the department will run the second annual Exeter Modern Languages and Cultures Forum, which brings Modern Foreign Language school teachers together with academics to talk about pedagogy, curriculum, skills and the handling the transition between school and university.
