Triple Royal Society first for Exeter physicists
Speakers from around the globe attended a very special Royal Society Discussion Meeting hosted by academics from the University of Exeter.
The event marked a triple first for the Royal Society. It was the first meeting outside of London to be held by the world renowned scientific academy, the first to be held at the new Kavli Royal Society International Centre venue (at Chicheley Hall in Buckinghamshire), and the first of the Society’s Discussion Meetings to be sponsored by the Theo Murphy bequest.
Professor Bill Barnes, Dr Alastair Hibbins and Professor Roy Sambles from the University of Exeter’s School of Physics hosted the meeting, which was on the theme of ‘Plasmonics and metallic metamaterials’ — where scientists look at new way to control and manipulate light. This exciting topic is part of the University’s science strategy theme on functional materials.
Held on 2-3 June, the meeting brought together leading experts from around the world to discuss the latest developments in the field and on the challenges ahead.
Professor Barnes said: “The invited speakers from around the globe were of one voice in praising the meeting as a landmark event, continuing the remarkable history of the UK’s most distinguished scientific body, the Royal Society.”
