Christmas lecture unwraps the science behind light
Families from across the South West are invited to take part in an enlightening festive treat, at a special event hosted by the University of Exeter.
As Christmas lights begin to adorn trees, mantle pieces and windows of houses across the region, the University will give a special free talk about the science of light and colour on Thursday, December 10th at the Streatham Campus.
Presented by Professor Pete Vukusic, from the University’s Physics department, the talk will show how both the biological world and technology are making the most of light’s very special properties.
The event, held in the Alumni Auditorium in the Forum, will feature a series of fun demonstrations and activities to show how the use of light has engineered the world we live in, and will shape the future.
The talk, entitled Light Fantastic: The Science of Colour, has been organised in association with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
Speaking ahead of the event Professor Vukusic, who specialises in BioPhotonics research, said: “Christmas is a time when the world around us is awash with bright and spectacular colour. Children have an intrinsic fascination with light and colour, and we want to be able to show them just what an important affect it has on everyday aspects of life.
“The talk will be suitable for all ages, and with demonstrations and activities on hand it is something that the whole family can enjoy. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the event.”
Professor Vukusic leads a research group investigating the ways in which animals and plants have evolved strategies for generating and manipulating light and colour, and how bioinspired technology makes use of these strategies.
The event takes place between 6-7pm on Thursday, December 10 in the Alumni Auditorium. There is free parking on campus, and tea, coffee and mince pies will be served. All are welcome, please register your attendance in advance.
