Professor Doug Stokes examines rising non-Western states, global shifts in economic power, illiberal non-state actors and the deep seated political, social and racial problems in the US

Professor Doug Stokes is working with City University's Inderjeet Parmar and Princeton's John Ikenberry on a new project entitled Ordering the World? Liberal Internationalism in Theory and Practice. The project examines rising non-Western states, global shifts in economic power, illiberal non-state actors and the deep seated political, social and racial problems in the US. ‘Liberal internationalism’ has long been one of the most influential approaches to the challenge of international order-making in the post-1945 system. In an unstable and rapidly changing world, how relevant is liberal internationalism as ideological construct, scholarly theory or practical roadmap in navigating a new and potentially non-Western world order?

The project will culminate in a special issue with International Affairs in 2018 and a new book as well as deepening international networks for the project's participant that are drawn from North America, Asia and Europe.
