The University of Exeter has co-organised a workshop on Populism at the prestigious Fudan University in China.
Exeter academics from both the College of Social Sciences and International Studies and the College of Humanities came together with their counterparts at Fudan to continue their collaboration on a number of pressing research questions on political thought in China and Europe.
The workshop, principally organised by Politics Professor Dario Castiglione, involved colleagues from two of Exeter’s major Research Centres, the Centre for Political Thought and the Global China Research Centre.
Amongst the Exeter academics who took part were Professor Iain Hampsher-Monk, a Professor of Political Theory and Joint Editor of History of Political Thought, presenting a paper entitled ‘From Democracy to Populism.’ Also from our Politics Department, Dr Ross Carroll hosted a session on the distinction between popular sovereignty and popular government, whilst Prof Castiglione ran a session on populism, popular government and representative democracy.
All three of these academics are members of SSIS’ Centre for Political Thought. Exeter now boasts one of the largest number of political theorists in the UK and enjoys an outstanding reputation in this field on the international stage. The group conducts research on a wide variety of themes, including the history of political thought and analytical political theory.
In addition to hosting a leading journal, History of Political Thought, the Centre has a large number of externally funded number of research grants and impactful projects, a recent selection of which can be viewed here.

The workshop is the latest in a long-line of collaborations with Fudan University, one of the largest and best respected institutions in China. Ranked 43rd is the latest QS University World Rankings, Fudan University has developed into one of the University of Exeter’s key Strategic partners. Workshops and joint colloquia between Exeter and Fudan have been commonplace in recent years, as has the exchange of faculty and postgraduate students between institutions.
