The judges said Natasha's article on dairy cows would benefit farmers
University of Exeter Psychology postgraduate wins writing competition
University of Exeter postgraduate Natasha Boyland has been awarded first prize in a writing competition run by the British Society of Animal Science (BSAS).
Natasha, who is in the third year of her Psychology PhD studying the influence of social networks on the welfare and productivity of dairy cattle, won the prize for her paper on factors affecting the colostrum quality of Irish dairy cows in seasonal, grass-based systems.
The competition’s challenge was to translate an animal science paper into a 500-word article aimed at farmers and written in a clear and simple way. The aim was to produce an article which was easy for non-scientific audiences to understand.
Awarding Natasha £100, the judges commended her article for its clear structure, relevance to farmers and its easy-to-read style.
“Farmers will benefit from the paper with the information provided,” they added.
Natasha’s article will now be published on the Animal Bytes section of the BSAS website, kick-starting her portfolio of published work.
