Eminent South African Theologian to Deliver Prideaux Lectures

Prof de Gruchy is especially notable for combining his scholarship with a strong concern for how theology is lived out politically and practically. He was closely involved with the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and with the later reconciliation process.

The Prideaux Lectures are held at least once every two years and address topics such as the Bible, Christian Doctrine, Christian Ethics, and Church History. The lectures were instituted, under the Will of the late Canon S P T Prideaux, on the death of his widow in 1959, to `honour the memory of Bishop John Prideaux of Worcester, a Devon man who from humble origin rose to great heights in the service of learning, his University and the Church.’ The Prideaux Lectures give the University the opportunity of inviting scholars from elsewhere to lecture on a wider range of theological subjects than is covered by its normal curriculum.

Professor de Gruchy will deliver two related lectures, the first hosted in Exeter Cathedral on 2 May at 7pm and the second held on the Streatham campus in the Xfi Henderson Lecture Theatre on 3 May at 7pm. Both lectures will look to explore what role the Christian faith and the Church have to play in the face of global political crises. Both lectures are intended for a general audience and all are very welcome to attend.
