University Council supports PhD scholarship

The University of Exeter Council has demonstrated its commitment to the Making the Exceptional Happen philanthropic Campaign, by funding a full PhD scholarship.

Members of the University’s governing body have made a donation of £90,000 which, with match-funding from Exeter’s Diamond Jubilee Scholarship programme, has resulted in a total fund of £136,000 to cover fees and stipend.

This support will fund a studentship for a UK/EU or international student to complete a PhD at the Living Systems Institute (LSI). The research undertaken will help to inform prediction, diagnosis and treatment strategies for some of the most severe diseases facing humanity.

Sarah Turvill, Chair of Council said: “Council members are committed to Exeter and were keen to play a part in our largest ever Campaign. As long-term supporters of the University, we have seen the impact that philanthropy can have on both students and research, and want to ensure Exeter can continue to make a positive contribution in the world.

“We are delighted to be able to support a talented PhD student to undertake valuable research within the LSI and hope that we will inspire others to get involved.”

The LSI is a new £52million interdisciplinary facility which pioneers novel approaches to understanding living systems and the diseases that afflict them.

Applications for the PhD will be invited shortly and details will be available online.

The University recently passed a significant milestone in its Campaign, with 50% of its £60 million target having been reached.
