Literature and Culture in the Ancient World: Greece and Rome

The Advanced Seminar is organized by Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, in cooperation with Venice International University.
The Program
The program will consist of lectures by scholars with a seminar approach on the origins and development of literary genres and literacy in Ancient Greece and Rome. Some lectures will be on broad themes and issues, while others will be devoted to the interpretation of specific classical texts, with more focus on textual analysis. The seminar will also host a number of lectures by invited speakers. Among the faculty and invited speakers in the last sessions of the seminar were Alessandro Barchiesi, Alan Cameron, Glenn Most, Matthew Leigh, Marco Fantuzzi, Michelle Lowrie, Douglas Olson, Johanna Hanink, and Mary Bachvarova.
The lectures will alternate with a series of site visits, for example, to the Marciana Library, the Library of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, and the Basilica of San Marco.
The Faculty
The faculty will include scholars active in the field of Greek and Latin literature and of Reception Studies: Yelena Baraz (Princeton University); Shadi Bartsch-Zimmer (University of Chicago); Luigi Battezzato (Scuola Superiore Normale di Pisa); Ettore Cingano (Università Ca' Foscari Venezia); Joy Connolly (American Council of Learned Societies); Bruno Currie (Oriel College, Oxford); Giambattista D’Alessio (Università Federico II, Napoli); Richard Hunter (Trinity College, Cambridge); Victoria Rimell (University of Warwick); Alessandro Schiesaro (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa); David Sider (New York University), Erika Valdivieso (Yale University). Other scholars may be added to the panel.
Whom is it for?
The program is open to 20 fellows who will be either in an advanced stage of doctoral research, or will have recently completed their Ph.D. The candidates will be selected by a committee whose decision will be final.
